Sphynx Cat Grooming
Schedule
A simple, repeatable grooming rhythm for Sphynx cats — exactly what to do daily, weekly, and biweekly to keep skin, ears, and nails healthy.
- Daily: a quick visual check of eyes, ears, and skin folds.
- Weekly: full bath with a gentle, non-drying cleanser.
- Every 3–7 days: ear cleaning with a natural ear cleaner.
- Every 1–2 weeks: nail trims and a closer skin-fold check.
- A consistent weekly rhythm makes the routine far easier to keep up.
Daily
A quick visual check is really all that's needed daily — a glance at the eyes, ears, and skin folds as you interact with your cat naturally. No special products or set-aside time required, just awareness as part of everyday handling.
2–3 Times a Week
A quick wipe-down with a soft, damp cloth on the face, paws, and skin folds between full baths can help manage oil buildup, especially for cats who run oilier than average. This isn't a substitute for full bathing, just a helpful in-between step.
Weekly
Bath time. Use a gentle, non-drying cleanser (see my recommendations on the Care Essentials page), focusing on skin folds, paws, and the tail base where oil tends to accumulate most. Dry thoroughly afterward, especially in cooler weather, since a damp hairless cat chills quickly.
Every 3–7 Days
Ear cleaning. Apply a gentle, natural ear cleaner and wipe visible folds with a soft cloth — never deep into the canal. Frequency depends on your individual cat; some need it closer to every 3 days, others can stretch to weekly. Full details are in my Sphynx Cat Care Guide.
Every 1–2 Weeks
Nail trimming. Sphynx skin is delicate, so keeping nails short reduces the chance of accidental scratches during normal play or handling. While you're at it, this is a good moment for a closer skin-fold check for any irritation or excess buildup you might have missed.
A Simple Weekly Rhythm
Many owners find it easiest to build a consistent weekly rhythm: bath on a set day, ear cleaning a few days later, and nail trims worked in every other week. Keeping it predictable makes it far more likely to actually stick — and most cats adjust well to a routine once it's established early (see my New Sphynx Kitten Checklist for starting this young).
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I bathe my Sphynx cat?
Weekly for most cats, though some with oilier skin may need it more often and others can stretch to every two weeks. Watch for oily residue as your guide.
How often should I clean a Sphynx cat's ears?
Every 3 to 7 days, depending on the individual cat — some need it more frequently than others.
How often do Sphynx cats need their nails trimmed?
Every 1 to 2 weeks, since delicate hairless skin scratches more easily than furred skin during normal play.
Can I over-groom my Sphynx cat?
Yes, excessive bathing can strip the skin and actually increase oil production as it compensates. Stick to a consistent weekly rhythm rather than bathing more than needed.
What's the easiest way to stay consistent with grooming?
Assign specific days — for example, bath on Sundays, ears mid-week, nails every other Sunday — so the routine becomes automatic rather than something to remember.
